Buddy System - if 2nd staff is present and available:

  1. Only pass medications during a time that is quiet and you are able to concentrate on what you are doing. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds. Put on gloves if you will come in contact with medications or bodily fluids. 
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – Follow the same procedure. Ensure that the person passing medications is not interrupted.

  2. Open specific consumer medication administration service in Rtask. 
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – make sure that the correct MAR is open.

  3. Open the locked medication storage place. 
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – Stand by, don’t go anywhere.

  4. Find the appropriate medication for ONE consumer. Make sure that you have the correct consumer’s medication and that they are the medications for the correct day and time.
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – double check the medication strip or bubble packs to make sure they are the correct consumer, date and time.

  5. Compare each medication label with the medication administration service to assure that the medications are being given as ordered (refer to provision of care {POC} as applicable). If needed, cross each med off on the blister pack/bubble pack as you go to ensure accuracy. 
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job - Compare each medication label with the medication administration service to assure that the medications are being given as ordered.

  6. Remove the medication from the container and or measure out liquid medications. Click ‘Pour’ next to each individual medication as you prepare the medications. 
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – make sure that all the medications are removed from the packaging. Make sure the dose of liquid medication was measured out properly.

  7. Compare the number of medications by counting the listed amount on the medication administration service to make sure you have the correct number of pills. 
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – Complete same step.

  8. Assist with and give medications as directed. (Crushing meds, mixing with food, give with water, etc). Observe to ensure that all medications are taken and swallowed.
    AS ABLE: Buddy’s job – Complete same step.
